Offshore wind in Ireland: every project, tracked

Ireland has 25 MW of offshore wind operating, the Arklow Bank pilot built in 2004 (StackPath tracker, Oct 2026). 3,799 MW across 5 first-phase projects awaits An Coimisiún Pleanála, against a target of at least 5 GW. Only 1,175 MW is unsubsidised and so open to data-centre power deals.

Offshore wind: from auction to first power

None of the new offshore wind farms has planning consent. All 5 pending applications (3,799 MW) are past their statutory decision dates, so on our assumed dates the first new power arrives around 2031, not 2030.

Each row is a named project. Grey bars show the time since its planning application was lodged, darker once the statutory decision date has passed; diamonds are the year we assume first power, and black ticks are the contract longstop, which for the ORESS 1 projects the State moved from 31 Dec 2031 to 31 Dec 2034 on 27 Mar 2026. Only the two projects that lost the 2023 auction, Oriel and Arklow Bank 2 (1,175 MW), can sell to data centres under the CRU's 80% rule, since state-supported output doesn't count. The lower chart sets our year-by-year total against EirGrid's adequacy cases: about 25 MW running in 2030 on our dates, 1,350 MW in EirGrid's base case, against a goal of 5 GW.

EstimateFirst-power years are this index's assumptions per project, from decision timing and typical consent-to-power times; EirGrid's figures are its own scenario inputs.

Only the losers can help. The two projects that failed the State's first offshore auction (Oriel and Arklow Bank 2) must sell to a company, so they're the only named offshore wind that counts toward data centres' 80% rule. Their ~4.6 TWh a year roughly matches the ~4.2 TWh needed. But neither has planning permission or a signed buyer, and none is likely before 2031–32.
