How many data centres are there in Ireland?
Ireland has 55 operating data-centre campuses, out of 79 known sites at any stage: 7 under construction, 6 permitted, 3 proposed and 8 lapsed (StackPath directory of planning, EPA, valuation and OpenStreetMap records, Oct 2026). Other counts of 82 to 149 list individual buildings or colocation listings, not campuses.

Why every count is different
Why every count of Irish data centres is different
Records are not data centres. 156 planning files, 93 mapped buildings, 66 rated properties and 29 EPA licences collapse into 79 campuses, 55 of them operating.
Each published count of Irish data centres counts a different thing. A planning file can be an amendment, a building is one of several on a campus, and an EPA licence only exists where on-site generators exceed 50 MW thermal. StackPath joins all four kinds of record by location and operator into 79 campuses (10 Oct 2026), then gives each campus one status from its strongest evidence: 55 operating, 7 under construction, 6 permitted, 3 proposed, 8 lapsed. Directory sites such as datacentermap list individual buildings and small server rooms, which is why their totals run higher.

One campus, many records
Count buildings and Microsoft Grange Castle is 12 data centres; count EPA licences and it is 3; count planning files and it is 26. We count it as one campus.
Microsoft Grange Castle in South Dublin is the campus with the most public records joined to it. OpenStreetMap shows 12 separate buildings, the valuation list rates 9 properties, 3 EPA licences cover its generator fleets, and 26 planning files describe its halls, extensions and amendments (9 of them found only by our planning-register model because their descriptions never say "data centre"). Every one of those is a legitimate thing to count, which is why published totals for Ireland range so widely. A campus is the unit that matches how operators build and how the grid connects them.
