European AI labs: who they are, what they raised, and how far behind the US they are

The 10 European AI labs we track have raised about $14.7bn in equity (reported totals or our sums, to Oct 2026). OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI have raised $359bn, about 24 times more (Epoch AI); OpenAI's Feb 2026 round alone was $110bn. Mistral, Europe's largest, has raised $6.5bn at a $24bn valuation.

Chinese totals are understated: Epoch tracks only Z.ai's and MiniMax's 2026 IPO raises, not their earlier private rounds. DeepSeek's $7.5bn is its first outside round (June 2026).

OpenAI and Anthropic have European offices (e.g. Dublin, London, Paris, Munich); we did not verify what research, if any, is done there, so they are not listed as labs. Photoroom (Paris) and Kyutai (Paris) are candidates for the next update; their figures were not verified this round. None of the labs listed is headquartered in Ireland.

How to read the totals. A lab's total is equity raised, not revenue or spending. US labs also sign multi-year compute deals worth more than their equity; those are not counted here. Valuations are from the last priced round or tender offer; for the listed Chinese labs Epoch uses quarter-end market value.

Our reading. Europe has several labs with real products and rising valuations (ElevenLabs at $22bn in a tender, Helsing at $18bn, Mistral at $24bn), but the money gap with the US frontier labs is more than an order of magnitude, and one US round in 2026 was larger than every European lab's lifetime funding combined. Open weights are where European labs show up most in usage (see AI model rankings).

European totals add each company's reported equity funding (or our sum of disclosed rounds, marked as an estimate). Two labs (DeepL, Stability AI) have no reliable total and count as zero, so the European figure is a floor. US and Chinese totals are Epoch AI's tracked equity rounds. Epoch tracks only Z.ai's and MiniMax's 2026 IPOs, not earlier private rounds, so the Chinese totals understate what those labs raised. Labs owned by US groups but based in Europe (Google DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs, Microsoft AI London, Meta FAIR Paris) are listed with the same fields and excluded from both the European and US totals; their parents fund them. Poolside is counted as US-headquartered (San Francisco, per Bloomberg) and excluded from European totals; it has a Paris office. Valuations are as reported at the last priced round or tender offer and are not market prices.

Questions people ask

Which is the biggest AI lab in Europe?
By funding and valuation, Mistral AI (Paris): $6.5bn raised, valued at $24bn after its Series D led by Samsung in September 2026.
How much have European AI labs raised compared with US labs?
About $14.7bn across the 10 European labs we track, against $359bn for OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI combined, roughly 24 times more.
Is Google DeepMind a European lab?
It is based in London but owned by Alphabet. We list it as a US-owned lab in Europe, with the same fields as Microsoft AI's London hub and Meta's Paris lab, and keep it out of both the European and US totals.
Which European AI labs release open-weight models?
Mistral AI, Black Forest Labs, H Company, Stability AI and Aleph Alpha (Kolibri, Oct 2026) publish some open-weight models; Helsing, Wayve, ElevenLabs, Synthesia and DeepL do not.
Is Poolside a French company?
It has a Paris office and is often called Paris-based, but Bloomberg (Oct 2025) gives its HQ as San Francisco, and its main compute project is in Texas. We count it as US-headquartered and show it separately.
